THE DOUG PIKE SHOW: Saturdays 7a-10a
More than a half million Houstonians fish and hunt, and as many or more enjoy other pastimes in the great outdoors ... like camping or sailing, birding or backpacking, kayaking or hiking. Doug Pike shares their passions for the outdoors and has done so since he grew up here in Houston. Running a close second to the outdoors for Doug is golf, a game he knows well and plays every chance he gets. To learn more about everything that makes Houston the center of the outdoors universe and a world-class golf destination, turn to Doug Pike and The Doug Pike Show, 7-10 a.m. Saturdays on The Sports Animal. Doug is a native Houstonian whose interest in the outdoors was apparent from the time he could crawl – and often did, right out the door and into the yard. Since then, he has fished and hunted throughout North America and the Caribbean ... even as far away as Sweden, but his roots are right here in Texas. During 20-plus years as an outdoors writer and broadcaster, Doug has won more than 100 awards from state and national associations for his writing, broadcasting, photography and editing. His enthusiasm for the outdoors and golf is contagious – catch it Saturday mornings on The Sports Animal. ::.E-MAIL DOUG.::

Police in Australia busted a guy earlier this week for driving his motorized wheelchair while intoxicated near Cairns (which happens to be a great starting point for black marlin fishing trips). The man’s blood alcohol level was five times greater than the lawful limit. They caught him in the turning lane of a major highway – sound asleep. Good thing he didn’t make a run for it. They might have had to deploy a spike strip…or maybe just tossed a thumb tack in his path.
Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses by a pathetically ignorant jury of his peers after being bitten on the backside by his neighbor's beagle -- which was on a chain in the neighbor's fenced backyard at the time of the bite. Williams did not get as much as he asked because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked. turns out, Williams climbed the fence, got in the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun. Next time you get a jury summons, PLEASE go.

Garrett Duncan - Scored a dunk June 24 at the 170-yard No. 7 on Houston National Golf Club's North Course. He used a 5-iron. Must have been a back pin, playing into a stiff breeze that day. Randy Anhalt - A Father's Day bucket at Westwood Golf Club's No. 15, 165 yards and almost all of them over water. Randy hit a 7-iron. Hope it stayed in the air a long time, and that he watched it every inch of the way. Eric Durbin -- Champions Golf Club, No. 11 on the Jackrabbit course, which plays 191 yards. Durbin hit 6-iron. And yes, he can hit 6 that far. Eric is the son of former city champ Gary Durbin and HGA superstar Jessica Durbin, and Im told the kid's got plenty of game. Phil Sowa -- This is Phil's first, and it was a pretty good one. He swung 8-iron at the 134-yard No. 17, Westwood Golf Club. Lots of sand around two-tiered green that's tough to hit, and it has no easy pin placements. Birdie is a good score there any day. A hole-in-one is quite impressive. Sowa now owes all of us a drink. Liz Reynolds -- Not one, but two holes-in-one in 72 hours at Champions Golf Club. Liz dunked a PW at the seventh on Jackrabbit, and she holed a 5-iron at the fourth on Cypress. Thanks, Liz, for reminding most of us - twice - that we still haven't made a hole-in-one. Make a hole-in-one? (I haven't yet.) If so, have your club pro send the information to dougpike@clearchannel.com, and I'll post it here for all your friends to see. Click on the Toy Box to see new outdoors and golf gear, and feel free to forward your own comments on listed items or other new "toys" you'd like to see featured here. Send it all to dougpike@clearchannel.com. July 4 - A Friday. Take advantage of the long weekend. Get the family outdoors for some fishing or hiking...or camping, if you can get far enough north on a tank of gas to escape the heat. July 7-10 - Woodforest Golf Club offers a junior golf camp, 9a-11a daily. Cost is $180 per child for non-members. Same camp offered Aug. 4-7. Call Dan White, 281-642-4436. Aug. 8-9 - Texas Bertram 31 Shootout, headquartered at Key Allegro Marina in Rockport and sponsored by Lone Star Yacht Sales. Proceeds send kids to fishing camps. Call Ryan Hutchison, 210-313-8940.

Happy Fourth of July
Thursday 07-03-2008 3:28pm CT
Happy Fourth of July. Get outdoors.
Light the fuse
Wednesday 07-02-2008 9:30am CT
Unless you're scared of scattered thunderstorms, there's nothing scary in the Fourth of July forecast. And if thunderstorms do scare you, it might be time to consider relocation. It's shaping up to be a good holiday weekend. Here are some ideas: watch the downtown fireworks, fishing, hiking, birding, golf, picnic in the park, toss a ball, swim, surf (if there are waves), water ski, watch people try to launch their boats in the morning and get them back on their trailers in the afternoon, ride a bike, ride a motorcycle, paddle a kayak, go to the zoo, take in a Little League ballgame, take in a Major League ballgame. Need more? I could continue but shouldn't have to do so. Don't know of a city in this country that offers more diversions. Pick one you like, and play a little.
If you do some fishing this weekend, try a topwater lure. You never know what is going to strike.
Humming along...
Tuesday 07-01-2008 2:28pm CT
Check out these pictures of Abagail Alfano, a Louisiana woman who raised the birdwatching bar recently. I don't care who you are; that's pretty cool. Hummingbirds migrate seasonally, in case you didn't know. They also can be quite aggressive toward each other, particularly the males, over territory or a mate. Incredible little birds, with heartbeats as fast as that of a 14-year-old boy who just found the Thong of the Day at 790's homepage. Hooked on fishing...???

A straightforward reminder to be extra careful this holiday weekend. The Fourth of July is a great time to get in some fishing with friends and family. Don't let the excitement cloud good judgment and cut the trip short. Keep closest watch on children, but don't take your eyes off adults who only get to fish once or twice each year. Be sure of what's ahead and behind before every cast, and be patient when handling hooked fish. I almost used another photo, one of a man who took a treble hook directly into the eyeball, but figured a few of you might be eating lunch when you opened the page.
